UFC 83 Predictions

April 19. Bell Centre. Montreal, Quebec. Its going to be a goody.

UFC 83 "Serra / St. Pierre 2" sees the UFC's first ever trip north of the 49th and with 21 thousand tickets sold, its the biggest event in mixed martial arts history.

Here are my predictions:

In the main event its heavy handed Brazilian Jui Jitsu expert, Matt Serra taking on Montreal's own George "Rush" St. Pierre in a rematch. In their last bout Serra caught St. Pierre with a right hand and pounced on the champ, taking his title. Since then St. Pierre has beaten the likes of Josh Koscheck and Matt Hughes. Matt Serra suffered an injury in training camp following his coaching role on the Ultimate Fighter series and has not fought since his last bout with St. Pierre.

I'm taking St. Pierre in this fight, his incredible well rounded abilities in the cage make him one of the most exciting fighters in the sport today. He is in his home town and hungry for his title back. Serra hasn't had a fight since the injury, and personally I think the guy got lucky in his first win.
Prediction: St. Pierre TKO.

Rich Franklin vs Travis Lutter is an interesting match up. Franklin and Lutter are both coming off of losses to Anderson Silva and if their performance against the current champ is any indication of their next fight, I've got Lutter in an upset. Franklin is on his way out, his last two losses to Silva look to have demoralized the former champ.
Prediction: Lutter by submission.

Nate Quarry vs Kalib Starnes sees another middleweight match up on the card. Quarry is 14-2 and 36 years of age, while the 33 year old Starnes is 10-3-1.

Quarry is coming of a win against Pete Sell in Septmber and Starnes a loss due to a cut againsr Alan Belcher in October. Both fighters love to stand. All of Quarry's UFC fights, win or loose, have ended in a knockout. I'm taking Starnes in this fight. Although Quarry has fought Rich Franklin, and lost in a highlight reel knockout, I think Starnes has seen a wider variery of opponents. Starnes has fought the likes of Yushin Okami and Cris Leben.
Prediction: Starnes in a descision.

Up next is Charles McCarthy vs Micheal Bisping. This is the Count's first fight at 185 and I'm looking forward to see him at this weight. His opponent Charles McCarthy earned the nickname "Captain Miserable" at the Ultimate Fighter house. McCarthy is 1-1 in the UFC with a win against Gideon Ray and a loss to David Louiseau.

I think McCarthy is in trouble this fight. After his loss to Evans, Bisping has something to prove at 185 and could one day take on the seemingly invincible, Anderson Silva.
Prediction: Bisping KO

Ultimate Fighter winner , Mac Danzig drops down to 155 to take on Mark Boeck. This fight sees a 5-1 fighter, Boeck, taking on a veteran, Danzig, who is 18-4-1. I think Danzig's experience will give him the edge in this bout, the same way it helped him defeat the freakishly strong Tommy Speer.
Prediction: Danzig submission.

In an all Canadian contest Joe Doerksen fights Jason MacDonald. Doerksen is two years younger than MacDonald at 30 years old with a record of 39-10. MacDonald is 20-9. Both men are coming off of losses, Doerksen has four in a row. The longer this fight goes the better the chances are for Macdonald who has a slightly better submission game and conditioning.
Prediction: MacDonald decision.

In the undercards I've got:

Alan Belcher KOing Jason Day.

Demian Maia submitting Ed Herman.

Sam Stout KOing Rich Clementi.

Brad Morris ground and pounding his way to a victory against Cain Velasquez.

Kuniyoshi Hironaka eking out a decision over Jonathan Goulet and his ridiculous haircut.

Sylvia? C'mon!

By now we have all heard the rumours of the Sylvia / Fedor fight, and like many other fans, I'm left scratching my head.

Why Sylvia? The guy is only 2-2 in his last four fights with wins coming against the less than stellar Jeff Monson and Brandon Vera. Hes gone up against the number three and number two ranked fighters in the division and lost to both. So what makes him think he can beat the arguably best pound for pound fighter in the world? Some don't even rank Sylvia in the top 10 anymore.

There is no doubt in my mind that if this fight goes through, the 28 - 1 Emelianenko will hand Sylvia his second loss in a row.

Perhaps this is the only one for Fedor to fight though. The heavyweight division (especially in the UFC) has been suffering recently. He has already beaten the current UFC champ, Nogueira, twice. His last fight with Hong Man Choi was one sided in the size department, but Fedor's trademark duribility and superior technique made quick work of the Korean giant. This super human Russian cyborg has not lost a fight since 2000, and that one was called because of a cut.

Now an eight year run is very impressive, but Fedor's descision to fight Sylvia instead of Couture (who I realise is in contract disputes) intrigues me. How much longer till Fedor is accused of dodging fights?

Either way, I'm excited to see Fedor fight again. It will be interesting to see how a slumping Sylvia does as well.

This week's headlines in the world of Mixed Martial Arts

Experts say Vasquez’s death was fight related.

In a fight with Vince Libardi on November 30, Sam Vasquez was knocked unconscious and later hospitalized. While in the hospital, Vasquez suffered a stroke and passed away. Now medical examiners have determined Vazquez’s death to be the result of complications from blunt trauma to the head with subdural haemorrhage.”

Vazquez, who is survived by his wife and seven year old son, is the first MMA fighter to die of injuries from a professional fight.

Elite XC tests clean.

Tests by the California State Athletics Commission administered to all fighters competing in the Elite XC March 29th event in San Jose all came back clean. The CSAC tested for both performance enhancing and abuse drugs.

The CSAC currently has two fighters under suspension for drug violations. Total Fighting Alliance’s Bobby Green and King of the Cage’s Evan Thompson both tested positive for Marijuana. They were each fined 500 dollars and have not fought since March of 2008.

Ultimate Fight Night results.

April 2nd’s Ultimate Fight Night from Broomfield Colorado lived up to its hype as only two of the twelve scheduled bouts went to decisions. Winners on the card were Kenny Florian, Thiago Alves, Matt Hamill, Nate Diaz, James Irvin, Gray Maynard, Josh Neer, Marcus Aureilo, Manny Gamburyan, Clay Guida, George Sotiropoulos, and Anthony Johnson. As for my predictions, I was 7 and 5.

Nate Diaz had the submission of the night, surviving a first round beat down to sink a beautiful triangle choke on Kurt Pellegrino. The shocker of the night was James Irvin’s highlight reel knockout of Houston Alexander in just eight seconds of the opening round. Irvin’s first shot hit Alexander on the button, dropping the 205 pounder who would later protest referee Herb Dean’s decision to stop the fight.

Fedor vs Sylvia a very strong possibility.

The saga following the world number one ranked heavy weight Fedor Emelianenko continues. In an interview with sherdog.com, Fedor confirmed a July 19th fight between him and former UFC champ Tim Sylvia.

Sylvia’s camp has yet to confirm the signing of a deal for this fight but claims it has been verbally agreed upon. In earlier interviews, Sylvia has been quoted as saying, “I have the utmost respect for that guy. He’s ranked No. 1 in the world. I want to challenge myself, and I want to fight him. No doubt in my mind. It’s the best fight out there for the both of us right now. You know he hasn’t fought any No. 1 contenders in a while and I think he needs to be tested and I want to be tested. I think it’s a great fight for me, it’s a great fight for him, and I think we need to make that fight happen.”

MMA Weekly reports that if the fight does indeed get signed it will more than likely take place at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas Texas. This fight would be broadcast on HD Net, owned by Mark Cuban.

Don’t mark your calendars yet though. With all the smoke and mirrors surrounding the Russian superstar, this writer wouldn’t be surprised if this fight ends up not happening.

A busy week of big news for MMA fans.

Le defeats Shamrock at Elite XC Strikeforce.

In what was dubbed the “Battle of San Jose”, Saturday night’s Elite XC middleweight title fight did not disappoint. Rising star, Cung Le was the challenger against champion Frank Shamrock. Both fighters hailed from the San Jose area and put on a show for 16 000 plus at the HP Pavilion.

The first round saw Shamrock stay true to his promise to stand with Le. The two traded shots for five straight minutes with Le barely winning the first round. A more aggressive Shamrock came out for round two, but again Le’s unorthodox kicks kept distance between the champ and challenger. Round three was much of the same until a stiff right by Shamrock had Le against the cage. Le fought through Shamrock’s barrage of strikes and threw a monster high kick that broke Shamrock’s arm. Shamrock could not answer the bell for round four and Le was crowned “King of San Jose” as well as Elite XC’s new middleweight champion.

This fight was one of the best I have seen in recent memory. If you are an MMA fan and haven’t seen this fight yet, watch it!! This fight and others from Saturday’s event are available online. Elite XC has put on some impressive and exciting fights in their past two shows. With fighters like Cung Le, Kimbo Slice and rumours of Tito Ortiz joining the ranks, the future looks bright for this organization.

Fedor officially a free agent.

In a press conference on March 28, M1 Global CEO Monte Cox announced an agreement with number one ranked heavyweight, Feder Emelianenko. Fedor will be released from his contractual obligations and once again become a free agent. “There is so much going on in the world of mixed martial arts right now that we have decided it is in our best interest if our company and Fedor go our separate ways,” says Cox.

This move will make Fedor the most sought after fighter in the MMA world. Front runners for the Russian superstar include the UFC, Mark Cuban’s HD Net Fights, and new Japanese promotion DREAM.

Fedor’s release also means the end of M1 Global. Differences between the American and European sides of the organization have caused the two sides to split. Monte Cox has now announced a new promotion, Adrenaline MMA.

Sylvia released by UFC, signs with Adrenaline MMA.

Former two-time UFC heavyweight champion, Tim Silvia has been released by the UFC and signed with new promoter’s Adrenaline MMA. Silvia says the release was a “mutual agreement” between himself and the UFC and looks forward to fighting with Adrenaline. The current number five ranked heavyweight, still has one fight left on his UFC contract and has expressed his intention to one day return to MMA’s biggest stage.

Adrenaline MMA was conceived out of the ashes of the now defunct M1 Global by Monte Cox. Cox says Adrenaline will be an organization that targets exciting, up and comers. The new fight promotion has a date set for their first event, June 14 in Chicago.

April 2nd Fight Night Predictions

April 2nd’s UFC Fight Night Live from Broomfield Colorado boasts the best card cable television has seen to date. The live, three hour event will hit the airwaves at 7:00 pm on Spike TV.

The main event sees Kenny Florian taking on Joe Lauzon in a lightweight bout. Florian comes into this fight the favorite with an MMA record of 9-3 and is 6-2 in the UFC. The 31 year old Boston native is famous for his submissions, as well as razor like elbows that were showcased in October of 2006 against former champ Sean Sherk. Lauzon is 23 and hails from Bridgewater MA. He comes into this bout with an MMA record of 15-3 and has three wins in the octagon, most notably his UFC debut where he knocked out Jens Pulver in just 48 seconds. My prediction for this fight: Florian wins by submission.

In welterweight action, Thiago Alves will fight Karo Parisyan. At 24 years old, Alves is 18-4 in his MMA career, going 6-2 in the UFC. Parisyan is 25-4 with a UFC record of 9-2. Alves is a striker with good grappling skills. The majority of his wins inside the octagon have come by way of TKO. Parisyan is a Judo expert with great throws, but has yet to score a knockout in the UFC. My prediction: Alves TKO second round.

Matt Hamill and newcomer Tim Boetsch will clash in a light heavyweight bout. Hamill is an alumnus of the Ultimate Fighter season three, and is the first deaf competitor to enter the octagon. His pro MMA record is 5-1, with his only loss coming in a controversial decision against Micheal Bisping. Tim Boetsch broke into the UFC in a big way last February. After taking the fight on 10 days notice, Boetsch dominated David Heath at UFC 81. At 27 years old, Boestch has a fight record of 7-1. His exciting fight style and incredible heart could make Boestch the next big thing at 205. My prediction: Boetsch knocks out Hamill.

Another anticipated lightweight fight sees Nate Diaz go against Kurt Pellegrino. Pellegrino has a 17-3 fight record and is coming off a TKO victory over Alberto Crane in January. Nate Diaz is the younger brother of MMA veteran Nick Diaz. The 22 year old has an 8-2 professional MMA record, going undefeated in his three UFC fights. Diaz is a grappling expert, with the majority of his wins coming by way of submission. My prediction: Diaz submits Pellegrino.

In what could be the fight of the night, Houston Alexander looks to avenge his loss to Thiago Silva in a bout with James Irvin. The 8-1 Alexander became an instant fan favorite in May of 2007 when he absolutely destroyed Keith Jardine in 48 seconds of round one. Irvin is 13-4-1 and coincidentally has also lost to Thiago Silva. Irvin’s most recent win came in December after Luiz Cane was disqualified. Both of these guys love to throw bombs and this fight is guaranteed not to see the final bell. My prediction: Alexander wins by TKO.

The undercard fights are also impressive matchups.

Gray Maynard (5-0-1) Vs. Frank Edgar (7-0)
Prediction: Edgar wins a decision.

Josh Neer (23-6-1) Vs. Din Thomas (23-7)
Prediction: Thomas wins by submission.

Ryan Roberts (14-2-1) Vs. Marcus Aurelio (14-5)
Prediction: Aurelio wins by TKO.

Jeff Cox (13-3) Vs. Manny Gamburyan (9-3)
Prediction: Gamburyan wins by submission.

Samy Schiavo (10-4) Vs. Clay Guida (22-6)
Prediction: Guida TKO.

Roman Mitichyan (9-1) Vs. George Sotiropoulos (8-2)
Prediction: Sotiropoulos descision.

Anthony Johnson (4-1) Vs. Tommy Speer (9-2)
Prediction: Speer TKO

UFC 82 Predictions

MMA fans are in for a treat on March 1. UFC 82 boasts a stacked card and a main event for the ages. Here are my predictions:

John "The Hurricane" Halverson vs. Jorge Gurgel

Both fighters are coming int into this fight with similar records. Halverson is 16 - 5 while Gurgel is 14 and 3. Gurgel is 2 - 2 in the UFC, coming off a loss to Alvin Robinson at UFC 77 in October. Halverson on the other hand is victorious in his only UFC fight. He devastated Roger Huerta with a knockout in just 19 seconds at UFC 67.

I've got Halverson in this bout, the guy has knockout power and an exciting fight style. Gurgel is a BJJ black belt but has yet to finish a fight in the UFC, all four of his previous bouts have resulted in unanimous decisions.

Prediction: Halverson - KO second round, second minute.

David Bielkheden Vs. Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez

As much as I hate Sanchez, I'm picking him to win this fight. Bielkheden is a newcomer to the UFC with an MMA record of 12 - 5. He is a BJJ black belt with solid ground and pound skills. The once indestructible Sanchez is looking to begin his climb back up the welterweight ladder after losses to Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch. Sanchez, who sits at 19-2, doesn't seem to have much finishing power. His last win was his only knockout in the UFC against the glass chinned Joe Riggs in December of 2006.

Sanchez is desperate for a win and has great ground skills. This fight has the potential to be a great showcase for Jui Jit Sui

Prediction: Sanchez - Choke third round, third minute.

Dustin Hazelett Vs. Josh Koscheck

A lot of people are taking Kos in this fight. The former reality show star has an 11-2 record in MMA and possesses some great wrestling skills. Koscheck is coming off a loss to Georges St-Pierre at UFC 74 and hasn't finished a fight since April of 2005, excluding his submission loss to Drew Fickett at Fight Night 2. Although he has great slams and excellent conditioning, I doubt the power in his hands.

Dustin Hazelett is where my money is for this fight. The 21 year old, fighting out of Cincinnati, has a 12-3 record in MMA and is 3 - 1 in the UFC. His last two wins came by way of submission in the first round at UFC 72 in June of 2007 and three months later at Fight Night Thomas vs Florian.

Prediction: Hazlett - Arm Bar first round, third minute.

Luigi Fioravanti Vs. Luke "The Silent Assassin" Cummo

Both fighters come into this fight at 27 years old. Firavanti has an MMA record of 12-3 and a UFC record of 2-3. Cummo has an MMA record of 9-4 and a UFC record of 3-3. Both guys like to stand up and strike. Fioravanti has some conditioning issues and had a tendency to gas. Neither fighter likes to go to the grounds and this fight has the potential to be the best of the night.

Prediction: Cummo - KO second round, third minute.

"Irish" Jake O'Brien Vs. Andrei "The Pit Bull" Arlovski

Its been over a year since the undefeated O'Brien last fought in the UFC. After a neck injury impeded his march to the top the 230 pounder's sight is now set on Andrei Arlovski. O'Brien is an aggressive wrestler with great ground and pound. His last win was against Heath Herring in a unanimous decision.

The former UFC champ Andrei Arlovski is on a two fight win streak. His most recent win came by way of decision against Ferbricio Verdum at UFC 70. Arlovski has knockout power in his hands and good grappling skills.

Prediction: Arlovski TKO first round, fourth minute.

Chris "The Professor" Wilson Vs. Jon Fitch

Wilson is calling an upset in this fight. His opponent, Jon Fitch, is on a 7 UFC fight win streak and has an MMA record of 20-2-1. Wilson is a striker with a record of 12-3-1 and is making his UFC debut.

Prediction: Fitch TKO first round, third minute.

Yushin Okami Vs. Evan Tanner

The Japanese sensation takes on the former champ in this middle weight tilt. The 26 year old Okami has a record of 22-4 and has a record of 5-1 in the UFC with his only loss coming to Rich Franklin. Okami is a ground and pound artist with a bright future in the UFC.

Tanner is 37 years old and has an MMA record of 34-6. This is Tanner's first fight since April of 2006. Tanner's strength is in his legs with great kicks and knee's.

Prediction: Okami Unanimous Descision.

Alessio Sakara Vs. Chris Leben

The war of words between Sakara and Leben is in full swing, with Leben publically questioning Sakara's right to be in the UFC. Leben is 27 years old with a record of 17-4. Sakara is 26 and has a record of 16-6. Both are great strikers and are looking to keep this fight on the feet.

Prediction: Leben TKO third round, second minute

Heath Herring Vs. Cheick Kongo

Despite Kongo's latest victory over Mirko Crocop, he still hasn't impressed me. Herring is a bad match up for Kongo, who has little ground skills. If Herring gets this fight to the ground he could do some serious damage.

Prediction: Herring TKO second round, second minute.

Anderson Silva Vs. Dan Henderson

Im so excited for this fight, I've been waiting for a long time to see it. Anderson Silva has been dominating the middle weight division, walking through everyone he faces. Dan Henderson's wrestling pedegree is a style Silva has yet to face. This will be the Spider's best test to date, and if he wins ... who else is left?

Prediction: Silva KO third round, second minute.

Metro

So we all know what a metro sexual man is. A guy with a feminine side. A man who puts pride in his personal appearance, likes to shop and is very trendy.

But what about the other side of the gender table? What is a metro sexual woman like? They must exist. What about those girls that love to scarf down wings, watch them game, shotgun some beers all still be hot? Is that what a metro sexual female is like? Are metro sexual s attracted to each other physically, not unlike hetero and homo couples? The whole thing really brings up more questions the more I think about it.

Could these new hybrid personalities and lifestyles that metro sexuality brings be the way of the future? Only time will tell.

Kimbo Slice

Say what you want about Kimbo Slice, the guy is my hero (one of my many).

Originally named Kevin Ferguson, Kimbo became an overnight superstar thanks to his backyard fight videos. The brutal, bare knuckle contests caught the attention of many (last check on you tube was well over two and a half million hits). One such person being MMA pioneer and legend, Bas Rutten.

Under the guidance of Rutten, Kimbo has walked through every one of his professional fights. In his three MMA bouts, Kimbo has seen a total of 2 minutes and 12 seconds of action. Take into account that Kimbo's street fights often went close to five minutes or more.

Now, you could argue Kimbo's opponents have been less than stellar and I agree. The Tank Abbott fight was a mismatch and Bo Cantrell ... that was a joke. But lets not forget, the man only has three professional fights. Stiffer competition is on the horizon.

Bas Rutten sees something in Kimbo, and wants to properly build his career. The very worst thing that could happen to Kimbo is being rushed. He is a proven raw talent and is living his very own version of the "American Dream".

Kimbo is legit, he's here to stay and with the right guidance and training he could be one of the most celebrated, revered, and decorated champions in MMA's short history, as well as Elite XC's flagship fighter.

As for future opponents, I think everyone has their own Kimbo dream match. Personally I'd love to see him drop to 205 and face the likes of Tito Ortiz. Tim Sylvia is another possibility in the heavyweight division.

Regardless of who he fights, the future looks bright for this Miami native. But God damn is he ever ugly!

Sorry Kimbo, you know Im just playin.

NIU Shooting

Well, it seems to be a growing trend in North America. If you're pissed off at the world, take a gun to school and work out some frustration. The latest shooting at NIU disgusted me. My heart felt thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims and the entire staff and student body of that institution.

Although the news of another shooting is troubling, one thing it isn't is surprising. Ever since Columbine we have seen a steady increase in these cowardly and ruthless attacks. Once the dust settles and the body bags are piled up, often the first questions asked are "who?" and "why?"

Naturally the public searches for a name and a reason why an individual would resort to such a cold blooded and useless act. We often then learn of the perpetrator being a loner, or bullied as if we are supposed to feel sorry for them?

The reality is these people are sick, twisted individuals that are an embarrassment to the human race. I don't care how lonely or socially awkward you are, you don't take a weapon into an academic institution and gun down kids in the prime of their lives. They deserve no sympathy, no recognition.

The media circus that surrounded Klebold and Harris after Columbine is a perfect example of giving these defects exactly what they crave. Before April 20th 1999 no one knew Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, now they are rock stars and martyrs to every other freak out there.

I'm sure the name of the shooter in the NIU tragedy will be released, if it hasn't already. In this day in age I could easily find it, but I'm not going to look. I'm not going to give this asshole the satisfaction. In my mind he deserves to rot in hell, alone and unknown.

Writers Strike?

TV and movie lovers around the world rejoiced today as a tentative agreement in the Hollywood writers strike was announced.

After 14 weeks of picketing, I ask what exactly did these writers accomplish? Was the strike as devastating to the entertainment industry as everyone thought it would be?

I myself wasn't effected in the least bit by the strike. I haven't watched network television with any regularity in years. Whenever I find the time to flick on the old tube my attention is usually on a sports network or specialty channels like Spike TV.

With reality trash dominating the airwaves another question is aroused. What exactly are these writers working on? In my opinion reality TV will be the death of the entertainment industry, but that's another post for another day.

So, was 14 weeks enough? I say no. The idea behind a writers strike would be to cripple the industry and bring productions of major network shows to a halt. This happened a little bit, the late night shows running re runs for instance, but not nearly as much as it could have.

First One

The time has come for me to become a part of the online sensation that is blogging. Can I get a woot woot? This first post is just an introduction (or warning whatever one you like) to what you, the reader, can expect.

I'll be ranting, raving and writing up a storm. Hopefully I'll get some fans along the way. If you like what you're reading let me know. Like most folks, I enjoy the ego boost.

That's about it for my introduction. I look forward to regaling you readers with tales of triumph, tragedy and everything between.. Thanks for reading.
